- 4 large russet potatoes (about 6–8 cups sliced)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
- Peel and slice the russet potatoes into thin, even rounds.
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and sauté onions until golden brown (about 5-7 minutes).
- In a bowl, combine heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Layer half of the potato slices in the baking dish, followed by half of the sautéed onions. Pour half of the cream mixture over this layer. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Top with remaining cheddar cheese and dot with butter if desired. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.
